The above digital images are available as quality photos in 5 x 7, or 8 x 10 inch sizes of the beach somewhere between Satellite Beach and Indianalantic Beach Florida. They include photos of the sand, rolling surf, seagulls on the beach and in flight, other sea birds, seashells and Portuguese Man-of-war jellyfish that washed ashore, the shoreline, typical plants that grow along the beaches. There are photos of sandpipers scurrying to feed on small creatures of the sea in the shallow water along the shore. Sandpipers are very quick to find food on an outgoing wave before it dives too deep into the soft sand and they are alert and agile enough to stay away from the next incoming wave. Some of the sandpipers and seagulls seemed to posing for pictures yet they would not dare get too close to humans before they fly off or run a few feet to several hundred feet away until they feel safe. While standing along the beach seagulls can be loners or roost in large packs while sandpipers seem to be loners. During the winter you can find seagulls several miles inland resting in parking lots, away from the onshore cool to sometimes cold winds. A word of caution about feeding seagulls. I would advise against feeding them anything. When there only seems to be one or two around one squawk will bring many flying over you. Before you know it there will be 20 to 50 scavenger birds of the sea waiting for a free handout. If you did not bring enough food for all of the seagulls they will poop on you or if you are in a vehicle, all over your vehicle. And their aim is typically good even on windy days. Warning about any kind of jellyfish, but especially a Portuguese Man-of-war in the water or washed up on shore. The tentacles of any jellyfish can sting you whether they are in the water and are alive or if they died have been on the shore for several days. Typically jellyfish seem to be more active, at least washing up on shore more during the winter or cooler months. A sting by a jellyfish feels more like a painful burn. Lifeguards say to pour white vinegar on the affected area as soon as possible to help releave the pain. In some rare cases there might be a jellyfish tenticle still attached. If so use a stick, a sock, a shirt, or towel to remove the tenticle. Do not use the article of clothing or towel or touch the area used to remove the tenticle until it is thoroughly washed. So if you are planning a trip to the beach I would recommend that you bring along a bottle of vinegar as a precaution. Make sure you bring it along with your choice of sunscreen and sunglasses. Besides picking through seashells found along the beach some people search for broken pieces of glass that have been sanded by nature. Brown, clear, and green glass pieces are the most common, with blue and red being the hardest to find. Some people treat these broken pieces of glass as treasures and proudly display their collection in a container as others would display seashells. Just some ideas on how to be safe and some things to do while visiting the beach in Florida. |
